Captain Rushbrook began her Navy career as a third year undergraduate medical student at Queensland University in 1991. Following initial entry training at HMAS CRESWELL she served in a variety of junior Medical Officer roles ashore and afloat including HMAS KUTTABUL, HMAS PENGUIN, HMAS WATERHEN, HMAS TORRENS, HMAS MORESBY, HMAS SYDNEY and HMAS MANOORA where she worked primarily in General Practice.
In 2001, on promotion to Lieutenant Commander, she took on health administrative roles including Senior Medical Officer at HMAS KUTTABUL and a Staff Officer role in Defence Health Services Division (now Joint Health Command). In 2005 she was promoted to Commander whilst the Officer in Charge of Balmoral Navy Hospital and the Primary Casualty Reception Facility. Subsequent roles at HMAS ALBATROSS and Systems Command (Navy Health) were a precursor to her promotion to Captain and assumption of the role as the Director Navy Health within Navy Strategic Command.
Captain Rushbrook completed her medical training in 1995 and also holds a Masters in Health Administration. She has been awarded a Fellowship with the Royal Australian College of Medical Administrators and a Conspicuous Service Cross in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list in 2005 for her work at the Balmoral Navy Hospital.
She is also the Vice President of Royal Australian Navy Rugby Union. Separate to her Navy role, she is the independent chair of the Calvary Hospital (Canberra) Clinical Review Committee and a Councillor on the Board of the Medical Benevolent Society NSW and ACT.
Captain Rushbrook is married to Andrew and has three sons at primary and pre-primary schools – Jordan (7), William (5) and Thomas (3).
